About the Digital Factory

The workshop is the kick-off meeting of the new ECMI Special Interest Group (SIG) on Digital Factories. SIGs serve as a platform of scientific exchange between researchers from academia and industry, and form the central part of ECMI's research activities in industrial mathematics. The term Digital Factory represents the shift in industrial manufacturing towards the integration of all processes in the industrial value chain, sometimes also referred to as the 4th industrial revolution. Its main goals are

• reconfigurable, adaptive and evolving factories capable of small scale production
• high performance production, combining flexibility, productivity, precision and zero-defect
• energy and resource efficiency in manufacturing.

None of these goals can be achieved without a thorough modelling of all aspects of manufacturing together with a multi-scale simulation and optimization of process chains, i.e., these goals cannot be achieved without mathematics.

Scope of the Workshop

The workshop aims at bringing together mathematicians working on modelling, simulation, and optimization with researchers and practitioners from manufacturing industry to develop a holistic mathematical view on digital manufacturing.

Topics of discussion include, but are not limited to

• coupling of multibody systems with PDE models to describe interactions between machine tool and its manufacturing tasks
• multi-scale models of complex manufacturing chains
• models for energy consumption of machine tools and more complex production systems
• optimization strategies of energy and material efficient production
• discrete event systems, petri nets and workflow simulation

Call for Participation

The workshop consists of a combination of plenary and contributed talks, accompanied by round table discussions. In addition, we plan a session with representatives of the MANUFUTURE technology platform and the EU Industrial Technologies Programme (NMP) about funding opportunities within Horizon 2020. We welcome academics and practitioners to participate in this workshop and to submit an abstract for a presentation on any aspect related to digital manufacturing.

Please note that the number of participants is limited. We kindly ask you to register at your earliest convenience, but not later than April 13, 2014.
