Analysis and numerics of multidimensional models
for elastic phase transformations in shape-memory alloys

Researchers:

Project Head: Prof. Dr. Alexander Mielke
Research Staff: Pascal Gussmann
Alumni: Dr. Adrien Petrov

Description:

Materials displaying elastic behavior as well as a second feature like magnetizability, polarizability, plasticity or phase transformability can be employed as multi-functional materials. They are used in many modern devices like in actuators and sensors or in medical applications for stents supporting blood vessels. Special classes of such materials are shape-memory alloys, where the desired shape-memory effect is produced by phase transformations of the crystallographic lattice, which are driven either by temperature changes or by applied stresses. This projects concerns the modeling of the hysteretic behavior of such materials to enable future efficient usage and design of such multi-functional materials and structures. Using mathematical analysis we develop suitable three-dimensional models based on the recently available material constants for NiTi or CuAlNi. Moreover, reliable numerical algorithms will be constructed for three-dimensional settings to allow for quantitative predictions of the time evolution of the deformations of workpieces with complex shapes and under complex loading conditions.
