Multiscale mechanobiological modeling of bone tissue regeneration
Although bone has the fascinating ability to self-regenerate after trauma, in many situations this regeneration potential is impaired. In this study, multiscale computer modeling approaches are used to investigate the mechanisms behind impaired bone regeneration and to evaluate potential treatment strategies. Using combined finite element and agent-based approaches, interactions between the mechanical and biological environments are investigated and the knowledge used to design mechanobiologically optimized enviornments to promote the regeneration of bone.
