International WORKSHOP
"Phase Transitions and Optimal Control"

Berlin, October 23 - October 25, 2008

organized and supported by: Weierstraß-Institut für Angewandte Analysis und Stochastik

organizers:   M. Brokate, TU Munich
P. Colli, University of Pavia
D. Hömberg, WIAS
P. Krejci, WIAS
D. Tiba, Romanian Academy, Bucharest

The workshop will focus on three main research areas: Phase transitions, optimal control, and hysteresis. The word "hysteresis" is usually attributed to processes that exhibit a rate independent memory. The physical reason for rate independence relies on structure changes in a hidden microstructure, which are much faster than the observer's time scale. Phase transitions offer a typical example of such a behavior. Due to the lack of smoothness, optimal control of such processes represents a special challenge for mathematicians.

The aim of this workshop is to bring together experts in all three research directions and stimulate a discussion on future perspectives of collaboration.
