Shape and topology optimization in optical applications

We consider optical devices as nano-antennas and pigments in paint as exemplary problems for shape, topology and material optimization in the context of electromagnetic waves interacting with obstacles and devices. We provide some insight into current activities jointly together with the Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Light and then formulate topology and shape optimization problems for the time harmonic Maxwell system. We show first results for the optimal shaping and coating of nano particles and provide numerical evidence.
