The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises eight non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes are members of the Leibniz Association.

„Modeling, Analysis, and Scaling Limits for Bulk-Interface-Processes“

(Head: Dr. Marita Thomas) offers from 01.01.2019 a position for a

 Research Assistant (m/f/d)

(Ref. 18/24)

in the project "Modeling and Analysis of Suspension Flows" in the frame of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+. In this project, a reliable model for the description of flows of dense, non-colloidal suspensions will be developed in cooperation with Barbara Wagner (RG7, WIAS), Volker Mehrmann (Numerical Mathematics, TU Berlin) and the Helmholtz Laboratory for Tectonic Modeling at the GFZ Potsdam. The scope of the project is to apply methods of mathematical and numerical analysis as well as image processing in combination with laboratory experiments. The successful candidate holds a complete academic degree as well as a doctoral degree in Applied Mathematics. Openness or experience in collaboration in an interdisciplinary team is a prerequisite. Strong skills in at least one of the following subject areas is expected:

  • methods for the mathematical and numerical analysis for fluid dynamics problems,
  • discretization methods for partial differential equations,
  • nonlinear transport problems,
  • free boundary problems.

Additional experience with the analysis or numerics of non-smooth problems or with parameter identification for partial differential equations is beneficial. Technical questions can be addressed to Dr. Marita Thomas (marita.thomas@wias-berlin.de) or Dr. Dirk Peschka (dirk.peschka@wias-berlin.de).

The fixed-term position is paid according to TVöD (100%) and is limited until 31.12.2020.

The successful applicant will be supported in their career development within the framework of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+. We specifically invite applications from interested and qualified female mathematicians as we desire to increase the proportion of women at the institute.
