The Weierstrass Institute for Applied Analysis and Stochastics (WIAS) is an institute of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB comprises eight non-university research institutes in Berlin which are funded by the federal and state governments. The research institutes are members of the Leibniz Association.

WIAS invites applications for two

PhD student Positions (f/m)

(Ref. 18/07)

in the Weierstrass-Group

”Modeling, Analysis, and Scaling Limits for Bulk-Interface Processes”

(Head: Dr. Marita Thomas) starting as soon as possible. The aim of the positions is the modeling and mathematical analysis of dynamical growth of fractures, delamination, and damage in elastic solids. Position 1 is devoted to the numerical analysis of these processes, i.e., to the development of suitable discretization techniques and the investigation of their convergence using variational methods.

Position 2 deals with the modeling of fracturing as a result of pore formation under the influence of fluid flow, and with the mathematical analysis of such type of models.

Both positions involve the close collaboration with research partners from Engineering and Geosciences.

Applicants are expected to have a university degree (Master or Diploma) in Mathematics.   Successful candidates will have profound knowledge in at least one of the areas functional analysis, nonlinear partial differential equations, calculus of variations, and mathematical modeling in continuum mechanics. Willingness to interdisciplinary collaborations is mandatory. Therefore, preliminary knowledge in physics or geosciences is desirable, or the strong interest and the readiness to increase knowledge in these fields. Moreover, knowledge in numerical analysis and programming are useful.

Please direct your queries to Dr. M. Thomas (Marita.Thomas@wias-berlin.de).

The initial appointments are limited for two years, but the goal is the conferral of a PhD, hence extension is possible. The reduced work schedule is 29.25 hours per week, and the salary is according to the German TVoeD scale (75%).

The Weierstrass Institute is an equal opportunity employer. We explicitly encourage female researchers to apply for the offered position.

Among equally qualified applicants, disabled candidates will be given preference.

All applicants’ materials (curriculum vitae, photocopies of certificates and a list of publications, including a cover letter) shall be sent with the reference number 18/07 exclusively in electronic form in a single pdf file by March 23, 2018 to:
