Elliptic and Parabolic Equations - Abstract

We discuss the problem of propagation of acoustic waves and their oscillations in the so-called incompressible limit for the Navier--Stokes system. We distinguish three basic cases: periodic domain, bounded domain, unbounded domain. We derive Lighthill's acoustic analogy and study its basic properties. Finally, a necessary and sufficient condition will be given for the acoustic waves to decay locally to zero.
